Juliet Zawedde AS’12 , Co-founder and Chief Development Officer of BC SWS was invited to Omaha, Nebraska to participate in the annual Warren Buffett trip hosted by Smart Woman Securities. Zawedde was the only student from Boston College chosen to join 20 students nationally from schools including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Columbia, Fordham, Dartmouth, and UVA.
During the first day of the trip, students visited various Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary’s, such as Nebraska Furniture Mart, the worlds largest retail furniture store. Additionally, the trip highlighted some of Omaha’s largest corporations such as Union Pacific and TD Ameritrade. The evening culminated with an intimate dinner with Business Executives including, CFO of ConAgora Foods, CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber, President of Streck labs, and the CEO of American National Bank to name a few.
The following day included an itinerary centered around the Oracle of Omaha himself, Mr. Buffett. The day commenced with a private 2 hour Q&A Session followed by lunch at one of Mr. Buffett’s favorite restaurants Piccolo Pete’s. Lunch guests were graced by a surprise guest, Jimmy Buffett, who entertained the crowd with a short ballad about the “smart women” in the room. The evening concluded with an exclusive 3 hour Gorat’s dinner with Mr. Buffett, where students were able to engage in conversation about Mr. Buffett’s personal life as well as receive a mouthful of invaluable advice.
Smart Woman Securities was founded on BC’s campus in the spring of 2010 with a mission to a mission to empower undergraduate women of all academic backgrounds and career interests with the investment knowledge necessary to manage their personal finances. Through an instructive seminar series, mentoring initiatives and meetings with successful investors such as Warren Buffett, BC SWS hopes to generate a supportive and collaborative environment that will enable more women to become financially self-sufficient.
